Rocky Mountain Fur Trade Rendezvous Site’s with Fred Gowans will be the theme of the Utah Westerners 2011 field trip. Fred Gowans has graciously agreed to lead the Utah Westerners on our annual field trip for 2011. It will be a 3 day 2 night foray, lead by our own Fred R. Gowans: emeritus professor at Brigham Young University who specializes in the history of the fur trade in the American West. He has written several books on subjects such as Fort Bridger and the Rocky Mountain Rendezvous. We are also expecting our own Jack Tykal author of Etienne Provost: Man of the Mountains to be helping us explore the sites and history of this fascinating era of western americana.Price and sites to be visited are yet to be determined. Set aside these dates: June 10, 11 and 12 of 2011.
Committee: Brent Reber, Vern Gorzitze, Steve Gallenson and hopefully Jack Tykal.
Entry filed under: field trip.

Your planned trip sounds great. In light of it, I wanted to let you know about my upcoming book, FUR, FORTUNE, AND EMPIRE: THE EPIC HISTORY OF THE FUR TRADE IN AMERICA (W. W. Norton, July 2010). Fred Gowans was an early reviewer of the book, and said of it, “”Eric Dolin’s research and publication represents an excellent study of the American fur trade from its emergence in North America to its conclusion with the near extinction of the buffalo in the late 1800’s. Dolin’s superb collection of primary sources and previous studies are the backbone of a major contribution to the total picture of the fur trade history in America.”
A video that gives an overview of the book can be found on YouTube at,
