Why do I attend the Utah Westerners? It keeps me “briefed” regarding some of the most recent research and writing in Western history. I hear and engage with evidence and arguments that are at times familiar and at other times new and startling. Discussions before and after a presentation (including during the Q & A sessions), are often as interesting as the presentations. Enjoying a great meal in the historical surroundings of the Alta Club (est. 1883) doesn’t hurt either. (more…)
1984: The Robidoux inscription cast
“Members of the Utah Westerners say they are a far cry from the toasty-dry, staid historians who taught many of them in school. The Westerners say they are more interested in history brought to life and history filled with fascination and intrigue, but they are no less interested in facts.”
That’s just one quote from an article printed in Oct 4, 1984, in the Deseret News. It tells all about the club in those good old days and quotes president Bud Rusho–with a picture of Bud presenting a fiberglass replica of the Robidoux inscription made by the Utah Westerners to the Museum of Natural History.
